The narrow corridor and dark shadows are painted predominantly in inky purples and charcoal browns. The timeworn stone wall, rendered in subdued yellow ochre and greyish tones of lilac and ivory, closes in on the shadowed man at the centre of the painting. He stands in a narrow doorway, almost entirely in dark, his figure silhouetted against the luminous yellows and greens of the world beyond
